A clear invoice gets paid faster. Here's what to put on a electrical invoice, a sample you can download, and a quicker way to make your own.

What to put on a electrical invoice

  1. Your business name, phone, email and address, plus your GST/HST number if you're registered.
  2. The client's name and the job address.
  3. An invoice number and the invoice date, and a due date. 14 days is common for homeowners.
  4. The work, line by line: labour by the hour, then materials such as fixtures, devices, wire and breakers, and the permit or inspection fee on its own line.
  5. Subtotal, any discount, HST or GST and PST and the total.
  6. Any deposit already paid, and the balance still owing.
  7. How to pay: your Interac e-Transfer email and the invoice number to put in the message, or a cheque payee.
  8. Short terms, such as the due date and what happens if it's late.

Tips that get electrical invoices paid

  • Include the permit number and the inspection date if the job needed one. Homeowners need it when they sell.
  • List the circuits or devices you installed, so the client has a record for the next electrician.
  • Ask for a deposit when you're ordering special fixtures or a panel.
  • Reference the quote they accepted, so there are no surprises about the price.
  • Make paying easy. One tap to copy your e-Transfer email beats a bank number on paper.
  • Follow up on the due date and again a week later. A polite reminder is usually all it takes.
